There you stood on the edge of your feather, expecting to fly.
While I laughed, I wondered whether
I should wave goodbye, knowin' that you'd gone.
By the summer it was healing, we had said goodbye.
All the years we'd spent with feeling ended with a cry,
Babe, ended with a cry,
Babe, ended with a cry.
I tried so hard to stand
But I stumbled and fell to the ground.
So hard to laugh as I fumbled
And reached for the love I'd found, knowin' it had gone.
If I never lived without you, now you know that I'd die.
If I never said I loved you, now you know that I'd try,
Babe, now you know I'd try.
Babe, now you know I'd try,
Babe.

Throughout this album, somehow, Sufjan makes me care about the state of Illinois. From detailed depictions of various landmarks and folklore, to moments of deep personal introspection; Illinois builds an incredibly dense narrative out of it's seemingly simple concept. The variety of sounds on this album is remarkable, compelling me to smile in one moment, then leaving me a sobbing mess in the next. One of the very few albums I'd consider to be 100% perfect.
